1. How do I join the JSA?
The JSA is open to any student of UW or WLU! All you have to do is come out to events.
To stay on top of JSA events and happenings, join our mailing list below. Facebook is also a great way to stay on top of JSA happenings!
2. What does it cost to join the JSA?
Membership to the JSA is free of charge. However, many events have a nominal cover charge (eg. $5 for Shabbat dinner).
To save money, consider buying an event pass. There are two options available:
Shabbat dinner pass
$15 for one semester
Includes 4 Shabbat dinners (usually $5 each)
Shabbat dinner and party pass
$25 for one semester
Includes 4 Shabbat dinners plus 2 parties (usually $5 each)
3. Can I come to JSA events if I’m not religious?
Yes! JSA events aim to be inclusive to members of varying levels of religious observance. Your level of Judaism will not affect your enjoyment of our events; we have events geared to fit the needs of all students. There are provisions and options to participate for all levels of observance.
4. Can I come to JSA events if I’m not Jewish?
Yes! Anyone who is interested in Judaism or Jewish culture is always welcome at the JSA.
5. Where is the JSA located?
The JSA operates out of the Latner Centre, a centrally-located house generously donated by the Latner family.
The Latner Centre is located at 148 Albert St., directly adjacent to WLU and a short walk from UW.
6. I’m a prospective student – can I speak to someone about Jewish life in Waterloo?

7. Is Kosher food available in Waterloo?
There is some Kosher food available in town. Chabad has compiled a list of what is available:

8. What do I do if I have a test/exam on Shabbat or a Jewish holiday?
If you have an in-class test on Shabbat or a Jewish holiday, first speak with your professor. Profs are usually accommodating for religious observance. If you have a final exam on Shabbat or a Jewish holiday, speak with the university registrar regarding rescheduling an exam. You should do this as early as possible.
9. What synagogues are located in Waterloo?
There are two congregations in town:
Beth Jacob, an orthodox synagogue, is located in Kitchener (www.bethjacobkw.ca).
Temple Shalom is a reform congregation located in Waterloo (http://www.templeshalom.ca/)
10. What do I do if I have experienced anti-Semitism on campus or in town?

11. Can I donate to the JSA?
Yes! Donations of any amount are welcome, and will help us to continue our work. Our donation form can be found here
